Having also become advisors to Muji Europe from 2004, Industrial Facility was tasked to develop childrens toys as part of Muji XMAS. In this context, it became interesting to produce a city that was sold in a bag, primarily because Muji is regarded as an urban company. Each toy city contains a simple selection of landmarks that are representative of the modern landscape, rather than historical icons. It became an instant hit. As the years went by, more city’s were added. To include suburban children the design was extended with Countryside, followed by Outer Space. So far there have been some 20 designs. It continues to be one of Muji’s most popular products.

Industrial Facility have created many variations of childrens toys. What binds them together is the lack of plastic (FSC wood is used in nearly all of them), and a wry sense of humour. The mobile Mobile Phone Puzzle is a reflection of what a lot of children would like to do – to take apart a product. Others, like the Apple Puzzle, tell a story as they are put together.

Since its inception, Industrial Facility has always been interested in the area of toys as a means of design communication. Some 50 toys have been produced with some documented here. These educational varieties started in 2006 and were inspired by the Montessori method of teaching. Simple blocks of wood are used as a method of explaining volume, fractions and percentages. Toys also cover anatomy, biology and technology.
