Toluca Editions commission an annual limited-edition project where they unite an artist, a writer and a designer. The artist prepares six photographs, the writer contributes poetry with a relationship to the art, and the designer proposes a box or case to complete it. It is an intimate collaboration of art and design, and each year it achieves a unique result. Edition 20 began with the photographs by Argentinian artist Jorge Macci and the writing of Alan Pauls. The photographs feature trees that have grown and swelled to subsume man-made elements like paper signage.
The challenge for Industrial Facility was to create a folio that acted unlike any previous edition, to display the artist's work, not just encase it. The frame can be hung while also storing the remaining five photographs. To achieve the structure and simplicity, the material Corian is used and expertly crafted by Hubert Weinzierl. The design incorporates a parallelogram, where the lid can be removed easily when laying flat to reveal its contents, yet when on the wall, it is held closed by gravity.
