Muji has become synonymous with simple, no frills products, and this is exemplified by its stationary category. In this field, the designer sees the consumer as a serious partner; to respond to his true needs and not to insinuate; to neither seduce, exploit, nor manipulate him. When asked to design a small pocket notebook, Industrial Facility adopted the format of a passport, using the exact size, corner radius, number of pages and fabrication process. For the colour, again the same spectrum used for passport nationalities was followed, so in this sense the work had already been done.
The result was an instant success for Muji on a global scale.
Pentagon Pen Collection
Client
Elephant & Coral, Singapore
Production
2011 —
In our increasingly digital world, writing instruments still seem to hold their position as anchors of reality. The Pentagon Collection consists of a fountain pen and rollerball pen that represent characterful simplicity, borne from patterns of use. The spherical cap transforms the pentagonal barrel into a seamless pen when the cap is screwed over it (a two-way thread allows the cap to turn in both directions). Pentagon is made from polished Ebonite - a very hard rubber - that is shaped and formed by hand. The pentagonal form itself is made of an odd number of facets that only a skilled craftsman can produce. The nib is made from 18K gold, with a specially commissioned nib-design by the artist and naturist Tham Pui San.
